Red's Recommendations: Wheelhouse Cycle
Great tunes, a disco ball and a sweaty workout with some of the funniest (and nicest) people you’ve ever met – what’s not to love? These are just a few of the reasons that Wheelhouse Cycle makes the #redsrecommendations list as my favourite spin studio in Ottawa!
The truth of the matter is that I never really liked spinning. In fact, I took a spinning class about 8 years ago, hated every minute of it and was pretty much scarred for life. Or at least that’s what I thought. The first time I met Wheelhouse’s owners Nadine and Heather we were chatting during a business meeting over coffee and I told them that I didn’t really like spinning. (I was being polite, I couldn’t tell them I hated it.) Their response was simple: “Wheelhouse is different, you’ll see.” In all honesty, I took this response with a grain of salt. C’mon, that’s what every gym owner says about their business! As we sat there chatting and cracking jokes, I watched their interaction play out like a tennis match, my head bobbing back and forth, trying not to pee my pants of laughter. These ladies were an absolute riot! Not only were they hilarious, but they were warm and welcoming, and I felt like I had known them my entire life. In that moment, I thought to myself “I’ll give this whole spinning thing another go”, and committed to attending my first class.
From the moment I walked into the studio, I knew they were right and this class was going to be different. A dark room with blacked-out walls, a disco ball, lit candles and some epic tracks pumping out of the speakers; as we waited for class to start I was already into it. By track 5 I was hooked. Pumping, dipping, tapping back and pretty much booty-poppin’ on the bike; Wheelhouse Cycle was bringing out my inner Beyonce and I was loving every minute of it. Every class is a dance party, an upper body workout, an energy share and an interval session all rolled into one. The 50 minute class is broken up into various tracks that are “choreographed” to the beat of the music to get your legs pumping and your heart-rate up. Not to worry, you don’t need a dance background to get thru the class, if my boyfriend can manage, I know you can too.
For me, a good workout has to be as enjoyable as the outcome itself. That doesn’t mean I want my workout to be easy, it means I want my workout to be fun, and Wheelhouse has absolutely nailed it. Every time I leave a class, I am a hot sweat mess having spent 50 minutes jamming out to beats with some incredible people, and had some great laughs along the way. What more could a girl ask for?
If you have yet to try spinning, or yet to try Wheelhouse Cycle, stop waiting and get yourself there today. This amazing studio has truly helped me find my spinning wheelhouse (pun intended), and I’m confident it will help you find yours as well. Check out this great video and my interview with their amazing owners Heather and Nadine below, and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about!
What do you want people to experience at their first class?
FUN. Remember as a kid when you just wanted to go outside and play and you didn’t realize that skipping rope was a great cardio blast? We wanted that feeling back. Wheelhouse Cycle is a place to come to work out your (for a lack of better word) SHIT. We turn the music up loud, we dim those lights, we let go of our daily stressors and for 50 minutes focus on ourselves. And there is nothing, NOTHING, like that moment when the ride is over and you realize what you’ve just accomplished (physically and mentally). That feeling right there – that’s the sweet spot.
What is your ultimate goal for the business?
We didn’t just want to build a spin studio – we wanted to build a Wheelhouse community. We wanted to connect like-minded people who are equally passionate, energetic, open-minded and curious. We also wanted to introduce people to themselves again – we are our own worst enemies. We are constantly telling ourselves what we can and can’t do. In a Wheelhouse class we ask you to re-evaluate those misconceptions. We push you outside comfort zones so that when you start believing in yourself on that bike, you just might take the confidence outside the studio and find your own wheelhouse there too.
What makes Wheelhouse unique compared to other spin studios?
We’re not just a spin studio. We’re your biggest fans. Your advocates. Sometimes the person you hate to love, but always the person who pushes you to go exactly where you want. We are in the business of building stronger bodies, but just as importantly, stronger minds. We want you to use our wheelhouse to find your own (on and off that bike).
What drew you to spinning?
Heather: A running injury forced me into spinning, but the music, energy, intensity and community kept me coming back! The cross-training has made me a stronger runner!
Nadine: As a yoga teacher my body was getting stronger but my heart and lungs needed a good butt-kickin’. I walked into my first spin class needing a high intensity workout, but left craving the community, the music, and most of all the energy and good vibes it brought into my life.
What’s your 2nd favourite way to sweat?
Heather: Umm….not sure my answer is appropriate for your blog….
Nadine: There’s nothing like feeling the sweat dripping from every pore while on my yoga mat.
What’s your favourite food treat/indulgence?
Heather: Margaritas and salted dark chocolate.
Nadine: How much space do I have….margarita pizza with a pint of Beyond the Pale’s Pink Fuzz, my mama’s blueberry scones, and salted caramel goodies are top of mind.
What’s your favourite cookbook?
Heather: Thug Kitchen. I eat meat, but that vegan cookbook is so well-written (if you like to swear and laugh a lot, like I do).
Nadine: Oh She Glows.
What’s your favourite Ottawa restaurant?
Heather: El Camino. Margaritas (see above) and tacos are my jam, so this one’s a no-brainer.
Nadine: I can only name one? SO HARD. Tennessy Willems (see pizza remark above).
